Strawberry Blueberry Smoothie

When strawberries and blueberries are both in season, this is one of my favourite ways to use them. There’s something about the combination of the two berries that works so well than just having them on their own. And with no protein powder, it comes in at 24g of protein and over 10g of fibre.

A smoothie can look nutritious on paper and still leave you hungry about 10 minutes later! This strawberry blueberry smoothie is different.

By adding yoghurt and chia seeds it makes it more filling, with more protein too. And with the option of adding protein powder, if you want to make it even more substantial.

It’s simple, takes minutes to make and is good post workout or as an easy breakfast idea.

And you want to know the secret to a thick smoothie? The chia seeds. You can’t taste them or see them, but it makes this strawberry blueberry smoothie super thick and creamy.

Why You’ll Love This Strawberry Blueberry Smoothie

  • Quick and easy – everything goes straight into the blender.
  • Made with simple ingredients – no syrups, flavoured powders or unnecessary extras.
  • A good source of fibre – thanks to the berries and chia seeds.
  • Easy to adapt – use your preferred milk and yoghurt and add protein powder if you like.
  • Perfect for breakfast or a snack – particularly with the addition of yoghurt, chia seeds and optional protein powder.
  • Naturally sweet – with an optional date if you like a little extra sweetness.

Why I Chose These Ingredients

Strawberries and blueberries form the base of this smoothie, bringing natural sweetness, plenty of colour and a good variety of nutrients. Strawberries are particularly rich in vitamin C, while blueberries contain anthocyanins – antioxidants that give them their deep blue-purple colour too.

I like using both because not only do you get different nutrients from them – you also get different flavours – and together they taste fantastic!

Yoghurt gives the smoothie a thicker, smoother texture and adds protein and calcium. It also makes it more satisfying than a smoothie made simply with fruit and milk. I use organic soy milk but if you’re not dairy-free use Greek yoghurt.

Chia seeds are an easy way to add fibre and plant-based omega-3 fats. They also help to make the smoothie thicker.

Milk provides more creaminess and protein than just using water. You can use your milk of choice here.

Vanilla paste might be a small addition, but it makes a big difference to the flavour. It gives the smoothie an extra hint of sweetness too.

The date is completely optional. If your berries are particularly sweet, you may not need it at all, but one date works well if you prefer a sweeter smoothie.

Unflavoured protein powder is also optional and is useful if you want to increase the protein content, particularly if you’re having this as breakfast or as a more substantial snack. I prefer an unflavoured powder (less additives and you don’t need any extra flavour).

Storage and Shelf Life

This smoothie can be stored in the fridge for up to 24 hours.

To preserve the nutrients, I prefer to eat the same day but if you are pushed for time, this is a great option.

If you want to keep the smoothie for longer, you can freeze it and thaw it overnight in the fridge before consuming.

Recipe Tips

Milk: You can use any milk or yoghurt for this smoothie. I use organic soy but you do you!

Freeze your banana: For an even creamier and chilled smoothie, peel and freeze your banana.

Swaps for banana: If you don’t like bananas, you can add a couple of dates for a bit of sweetness. Otherwise, a half an avocado is a good swap – you get the creaminess but it’s a little less sweet.

Use frozen berries: You can use frozen strawberries and blueberries too. You may need to add a little extra milk to help everything blend.

Make it more filling: Add the optional protein powder, particularly if you’re having this as breakfast.

High powered-blender: If you want a really smooth smoothie – you’ll need a high-powered blender. Also make sure you blend for a good minute before drinking.

Equipment

Ingredients

  • 1 cup milk of choice (250ml)
  • ½ cup natural yoghurt (125g)
  • 1 small banana
  • ½ cup blueberries (75g)
  • 1 cup strawberries (150g)
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds
  • ½ tsp vanilla paste
  • 1 date optional

Instructions

  • Simply add everything to a blender and blend for at least 1 minute, until smooth

Notes

  • You can use fresh or frozen fruit for this one. If you use fresh fruit, you may want to pour the smoothie over ice, if you prefer it ice cold.
  • The recipe makes one large serving, however, if this is too much, you can always divide into two portions.
  • If you want even more protein, feel free to add in a scoop of unflavoured protein powder too.
  • If your fruit is fresh and sweet, you won’t need the date. If it’s a little more out of season, add in the date for more sweetness.
  • Nutritional information will vary depending on the milk, yoghurt and any protein powder used. I used organic soy milk and yoghurt .,
