Some might call this blueberry sorbet a smoothie bowl!  I prefer sorbet! But whatever you call it – it’s amazing!

When it’s warm outside you want treats that cool you down. This blueberry sorbet is perfect for that.

How to make a refined sugar free sorbet?

Most sorbets contain lots and lots of refined sugar. If you want to try one that is refined sugar free, then read on!

It’s very simple, rather than adding sugar, I use frozen bananas. You get a lovely sweetness, as well as all the other benefits you get from bananas.

If you already have frozen bananas in your freezer, it only takes minutes to make. You simply blend the frozen bananas with the blueberries and milk, until soft and smooth.

It will then be a gorgeous sorbet texture, which you can eat straight away.

What ingredients do you need to make an easy blueberry sorbet?

You only need 3 simple ingredients to make this blueberry sorbet:

  • Bananas
  • Blueberries
  • Almond milk

Why are bananas good for you?

Bananas are a great choice for refined sugar-free recipes like this one. They are naturally sweet and packed with nutrients. They are rich in natural sugars, which usually don’t give you the sugar spike you get from using too many refined sugars.

From a nutritional perspective, bananas are a powerhouse of vitamins and minerals. They are well-known for their potassium content, but they are also high in vitamin B6, which is vital for the production of neurotransmitters like serotonin and for the production of red blood cells. Bananas are also a good source of vitamin C, which is good for your immune system.

Their fibre content is what is key when you are comparing them to more refined sugars. Fibre helps to prevent energy dips and keeps you feeling fuller for longer. The fibre also slows down sugar absorption, reducing the risk of spikes in blood sugar often caused by more refined sugars.

What are the nutritional benefits of blueberries?

Blueberries are fantastic for recipes like this. Not only do they make everything a fantastic colour and flavour, they are also contain so much goodness. They are high in Vitamins C and E as well as many of the B vitamins. In addition, they contain magnesium, zinc and anthocyanins.

Anthocyanins are powerful phytonutrients which give the blueberries their blue colour. They have many functions, including being powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatories.

They are one of many reasons why you should try and get a portion of blueberries into your diet 4-5 times per week.

If fresh ones aren’t in season, frozen blueberries are a great option to have to hand. This is what I have used for this recipe.

Give it a try and let me know what you think the comments.

Recipe tips

  • Feel free to sub in your favourite fruit if you don’t want to use blueberries. You could use strawberries or raspberries for example.
  • I like to eat immediately. However, you can also put in the freezer to set and use later. It will be harder like this. You may want to take out of the freezer for 5-10 minutes before eating.
  • The recipe serves 2 but depending on your appetite, this could also make one large portion.
