If you are looking for a fun homemade gift, try these healthy toffifee!

The original toffifee has that amazing combination of chocolate, caramel, and hazelnuts. However, the original also contains 20 different ingredients including refined sugars, palm oil and emulsifiers.

This vegan, healthy version is a quick, easy, and nutritious twist on the traditional recipe with only 3 simple ingredients.

Are these healthy toffifee easy to make?

They are very easy to make. You simply add the dates and most of the hazelnuts to a food processor and blend well. Divide into 18 and put them in a mini cupcake case. Make an indent in each one (I just use the handle of a rolling pin to do this). Put a hazelnut into each one and top with melted dark chocolate. So easy!

Do you need a food processor to make them?

Ideally yes. The dates can be difficult to process into a smooth paste in a blender. And you don’t want to have to add too much water to the dates or soak them first, as this will change the texture of the toffifee.

Are toffifee nutritious?

I think this version is! They are rich in healthy fats and key nutrients such as magnesium and Vitamin E. And because they are home-made you can judge for yourself what goes in them.

The Three Simple Ingredients:

  • Medjool dates
  • Hazelnuts
  • Dark chocolate

Medjool dates

My preferred sweetener for sweet treats is always dates! And medjool dates are the best. They are naturally sweet and packed with fibre. They’re also a good source of potassium, magnesium and vitamin B6.

Hazelnuts

These nuts are high in healthy monounsaturated fats and a good source of vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant that supports skin health and reduces inflammation. They also contain magnesium and B vitamins, which are great for energy.

Dark Chocolate
You will know by now that dark chocolate is always my preferred choice. It’s a good source of antioxidants and contains minerals such as iron, magnesium, and copper. I also opt for one that has minimal sugar and at least 70% cocoa solids.

Storage and Shelf Life

These healthy toffifee store really well. I like to store in the fridge as it keeps them harder and ensures they last longer. They’ll last for at 8-10 days.

They also freeze well and will last for up to 3 months in the freezer.

Recipe Tips

Use a Food Processor: A food processor is needed to ensure you blend the ingredients fully. A blender will usually struggle to blend the dates into a smooth paste.

Use Silicone Moulds: Silicone cupcake moulds are ideal for shaping the Toffifee. If you don’t have a mould, you can use mini cupcake liners or shape them by hand instead.

Chocolate: I have used dark chocolate that is 70% cocoa solids.  I prefer this as it’s less sweet and has more of the goodness from chocolate. However, if you would prefer a different chocolate option, please use that.

Add a pinch of sea salt: For a salty-sweet taste, add a pinch of sea salt to the base whilst mixing.

Instructions

  • Add 1 cup of hazelnuts and the pitted dates to a food processor and blend until smooth. If your dates are hard try adding a tbsp or 2 of water as you blend.
  • Divide the mixture into 18 and roll into balls. Place into a mini cupcake tray (or cases). Make an indent into the centre of each ones (with the handle of a wooden spoon). Put a whole hazelnut into each one.
  • Melt the chocolate in a bowl over a pan of hot water. Once melted, pour a spoonful of melted dark chocolate into each cup. Refrigerate to set.

Notes

  • I use a vegan, 70% cocoa solids dark chocolate.
  • Try to use very soft medjool dates that don’t need pre-soaking. If you have to soak the dates the texture may be too soft.

Hi, how long would they keep and do they freeze well?

Hi Laura, there’s a storage section in the recipe. I like to store in the fridge as it keeps them harder and ensures they last longer. They’ll last for at 8-10 days. They also freeze well and will last for up to 3 months in the freezer.
